Computer Science, focus on Communication and Media in Computer Science (B.Sc.)

Three young women sit together at a laptop and concentrate on their work in a modern room. An orange-colored graphic with the inscription "Computer science, focus on communication and media in computer science (B.Sc.)" is superimposed on the lower part of the picture.

Course outline

Computer science is changing rapidly. New applications, programmes and devices are constantly coming onto the market. The demands for flexibility and creativity are increasing. In the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science with a focus on Communication and Media in Computer Science (KMI), students first learn the technical and methodological basics of computer science, including the common programming languages. One focus of the curriculum is theoretical and practical software development. While hardware-related programming is somewhat less important than on the regular Bachelor's degree programme, the focus is on social and communication skills such as team reflection. Students are also trained in design so that they can develop products with a higher level of usability.

Entry Requirements

The study programme is not subject to admission restrictions (no NC), however, proof of completion of an online self-assessment must be provided for enrolment. Further information can be found here. Admission requirements include the following qualifications:

  • general higher education entrance qualification
  • subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification valid in Hesse
  • entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences valid in Hesse

Various competences and skills are required for a successful computer science degree. These include

  • mathematical-logical and abstract thinking skills
  • the willingness and ability to familiarise yourself with complex topics and to want to get to the bottom of them
  • independent, careful and results-orientated work
  • frustration tolerance
  • ability to work in a team
  • good English and PC skills

A detailed description of the admission requirements can be found in the Special Provisions of the Examination Regulations (BBPO).

Study programme

KMI students attend the same courses as students on the traditional computer science bachelor's programme. However, the KMI programme sets its own accents with project-based courses. In the very first semester, a project helps to form learning groups for the entire course outline. The first two semesters also focus on the basics of computer science. In the third and fourth semesters, students can choose core elective modules in cooperation with the Media faculty. Interactive products are developed in these modules. The Bachelor's thesis is usually written in a company.

  • A detailed description of the programme content can be found in the module handbook.
  • An overview of the individual modules in the course of study can be found in the module graphic.
The diagram shows the study plan for the Bachelor's degree course in Computer Science, specializing in Communication and Media in Computer Science (B.Sc.) at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences over six semesters.
1st semester: Programming 1 (7.5 CP), Mathematics 1 (7.5 CP), Algorithms and Data Structures (5 CP), Project Fundamentals of Computer Science (5 CP), IT Security (5 CP). 2nd semester: Programming 2 (7.5 CP), Mathematics 2 (7.5 CP), Software Craftsmanship (5 CP), Computer Architecture (5 CP), Operating Systems (5 CP). 3rd semester: Theoretical Computer Science (5 CP), Software Engineering (5 CP), Databases (5 CP), Human-Computer Interaction (5 CP), M-Catalog Import FB Media (5 CP). 4th semester: M-Catalog Import FB Media (5 CP), Artificial Intelligence (AI, 5 CP), Development of Web-based Applications (5 CP), Visual Computing (5 CP), Distributed Systems (5 CP), Business Informatics (5 CP). 5th semester: Project Management (2.5 CP), Project System Development (7.5 CP), two compulsory elective modules (5 CP each), Communication and Media (2.5 CP), Intercultural Communication (2.5 CP), Social and Cultural Sciences (2.5 CP), Computer Science and Society (2.5 CP). 6th semester: practical phase with accompanying seminar (15 CP) and Bachelor's thesis with Bachelor's seminar (15 CP). Subsequently, a consecutive Master's degree course in Computer Science (Master of Science) with four semesters (120 CP) is possible; this qualifies for a doctorate.
