The prerequisite is a qualified first academic degree in computer science (e.g. a qualified Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a degree in Computer Science). Until now, applicants from German universities were expected to have an overall grade of "good" or "very good" (i.e. a final grade of 2.5 or better). In addition, sufficient knowledge of the respective teaching language is expected (usually German). Suitable proof must be provided.
The Faculty of Computer Science presents itself at various information events. Among other things, the faculty is represented every year at hobit (Contact), on Girl's Day/Boy's Day and as part of the Hessen Technikum.

Good to know
Although an advanced maths course is not a mandatory requirement for studying computer science, it is important to have a good understanding of mathematics in order to successfully master the complex content. Logical thinking, curiosity and enthusiasm for technology are key qualities that you should have for a course outline in this subject. You can use the Maths Learning Centre to brush up on the basics of mathematics.
In addition, a love of learning and discovering new, sometimes challenging topics is an advantage. A willingness to deal with complicated issues and explore new things is an important prerequisite. You should also enjoy getting to the bottom of things and not give up, even during lengthy and sometimes frustrating solution processes. Successfully finding solutions and achieving a functioning system are particularly satisfying and motivating.
It is of course helpful if you have already had computer science lessons at school. You don't have to know how to programme, but an interest in it is an advantage.
You will need a mid-range laptop for the courses and to be able to complete the exercises. Operating systems can be Linux, Windows or Apple.
Jobs in the field of computer science require a wide range of skills that go beyond pure programming. In addition to technical knowledge, communication skills are particularly important. As a computer scientist, you are often in close contact with customers and users in order to understand their needs and develop suitable solutions. It is therefore essential to precisely understand the requirements and wishes of users and to communicate them in an understandable way.
Furthermore, teamwork is a central component of working in IT. Working in interdisciplinary teams requires social skills, the ability to cooperate and the willingness to work together on projects.
A good command of English is also an advantage, as the IT sector is international in nature and a lot of technical literature, documentation and communication channels are in English.
You should also be willing to work hard and be well organised in order to meet the diverse demands of your studies and career. A structured way of working and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are important prerequisites for a successful career in computer science.
The career prospects for computer scientists are extremely promising. With a degree in computer science, you will be in high demand on the labour market, as IT plays a central role in almost all areas of life.
Whether in medicine, business, administration or the private sector - our digital world is almost unimaginable without IT. As an IT specialist, you have the opportunity to play an active role in shaping and improving our everyday lives. For example, you can develop portals for donations or refugee aid in the social sector or create innovative solutions for efficient energy utilisation in the smart home sector - a contribution to climate protection.
There is also the opportunity to develop websites or apps that make everyday life easier for people with disabilities. The variety of possible applications is almost unlimited, so you can choose your personal domain in which you would like to apply your passion and skills.
A degree in computer science therefore not only opens up excellent career prospects for you, but also the opportunity to make meaningful and sustainable contributions to various areas of society. We warmly invite you to embark on this exciting path and play an active role in shaping the future.
