Faculty of Computer Science

We are shaping digitalisation in society!

At the Computer Science faculty at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, you will study at one of the largest computer science departments for applied sciences in Germany. The course outline combines fundamentals with practical projects and current research. A wide range of bachelor's and master's programmes are offered. You can also study Computer Science in a dual study programme.

We are the only university for applied Computer Science where you can directly pursue a doctorate. We also promote doctorates in cooperation with other universities. More than 30 doctoral theses have already been successfully completed.

Here you will experience Computer Science in its entirety: from theory and scientific research to the latest technologies and fields of application such as databases, networks, internet and mobile technologies, IT security, robotics, artificial intelligence, multimedia and graphics. Research groups develop topics and projects for bachelor's and master's theses. Our modern laboratories enable the direct application of theoretical knowledge in projects and internships.

Through cooperation with companies in the Rhine-Main area, you will gain practical experience early on and make contacts that will make it easier for you to start your career.

Our range of courses

Our Faculty of Computer Science offers a wide range of bachelor's and master's degree programmes. You can pursue specialisations in topics such as IT security, big data, augmented reality or economic aspects. The programmes combine theoretical knowledge with practical application and research, ensuring that students are optimally prepared for their future careers.

You can find an overview of the individual study programmes here:

Computer Science (B.Sc)

The Computer Science study programme, which leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree, enables students to contribute creatively and independently to the high-quality solution of information technology problems in almost all areas of application.

Computer Science KMI (B.Sc.)

In the Bachelor's study programme in Computer Science, specialising in Communication and Media in Computer Science (KMI), students first learn the technical and methodological fundamentals of Computer Science, including common programming languages.

Dual degree in Computer Science (B.Sc.)

The Cooperative Study Programme in Computer Science (KoSI) combines topics from general and business informatics. Core elective modules allow students to pursue specific specialisations.

Computer Science - dual - KITS (B.Sc.)

In the Cooperative IT Security study programme (KITS), students learn to develop security measures for IT applications – not only for corporate networks, data centres and traditional PCs, but also for smartphones, tablets and the internet.

Computer Science (M.Sc.)

The application-oriented Master's programme teaches the current state of the art and equips students with the ability to apply it to problems and develop innovative solutions.

Dual degree in Computer Science (M.Sc.)

The dual Master's study programme in Computer Science teaches students how to apply scientific methods and findings when dealing with difficult and complex problems in the field of Computer Science.

Good to know

  • The Hessen-Technikum is aimed at students who have completed their Abitur or Fachhochschulreife (“Fach-Abi”) and wish to gain an insight into degree subjects and careers in the STEM fields (including Computer Science).
  • The hobit is a great way to find out about the various degree programmes.
  • The hejmint trial study programme always starts in March and September and lasts a total of 7 months, including the industrial placement. You will spend a semester trialling STEM study programmes of your choice and getting a taste of companies and STEM training opportunities in the Darmstadt region.

For many years, our faculty has been committed to introducing children and school pupils to the exciting field of Computer Science and helping them choose a career or course of study.

  • We support Girls’ Day / Boys’ Day, where school pupils (from Year 8 onwards) can gain an insight into careers in Computer Science.
  • At the KinderCampus, children aged 10 to 14 learn how to use robot technology in a playful way.
  • We invite teachers to visit our faculty. We would be happy to give you a tour of the faculty and arrange for you to attend a lecture. Visits to interested schools themselves are also possible. Please feel free to contact our Dean’s Office.
  • At the MINT Centre in Seeheim, Prof. Dr Ute Trapp offers the workshop ‘Computer Science for Schoolgirls’.

Our faculty is offering two awards to recognise the outstanding achievements of our students.

You have no doubt noticed the many display cases in our D14 building. These form our computer science collection.

The collection originated from models and equipment developed by Prof. Dr Alwin Walther at the Institute for Practical Mathematics (IPM) at Darmstadt Technical University, which he founded in 1928 and headed until 1966. The collection contains almost all of the teaching materials that remained after the IPM was dissolved in 1967. The collection has been systematically expanded with items from our faculty, as well as donations and loans, in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the development of Computer Science and its teaching materials.
