Study at our faculty

Studierender mit Rucksack schaut auf Weltkarte

Welcome to the computer science faculty

Are you interested in coming to Darmstadt for your semester abroad? Or are you already packing your bags for your exchange semester here at the computer science faculty? Then this page is just right for you. We would like to give you a brief insight into our campus and the courses you can attend here, as well as our student counselling service.

We promote and encourage our students to study and work in English, so it is unlikely that there are larger language barrier issues in everyday life - you will easily find your way around.

Already now, you can take our virtual tour for a first taste of the local area.

Academic calendar

There are two semesters per year:

  • Winter semester: beginning of October to late-February
  • Summer semester: beginning of April to late-July

The exact dates can be found in the official academic calendar.

The computer science faculty also offers English language modules/courses at Bachelor's and Master's level. Below is an overview of the modules and the courses on offer by the faculty. Please bear in mind that we only finalize our course offerings late, i.e. just shortly before the start of a semester.

English course offerings and timetables

The following regular timetable is planned in English for the winter term 2026/27 (additional compact courses are possible, these are not shown in the tables):

Module descriptions

The above module descriptions are inofficial reading versions, translated with the help of DeepL from German to English. Module language (instruction and exams) is German in general, partly English (see above for current schedule).

Final thesis

In general, you are also welcome to write your thesis with us. Please let us know well in advance, including your proposed topic, so that we can explore the possibilities together.

Learning Agreement ("Lernvereinbarung")

In preparation for your stay at our faculty, you will be asked to complete a learning agreement for your chosen modules.

  • A module consists of one or more courses, and a course is always part of a module.
  • A course can be a lecture, a seminar, a laboratory or a project.

There are electronic module descriptions with comprehensive information for every module offered at our faculty. You can find the official versions in my.h-da.de, our course catalogue system. Here you can also view the official timetables and find out which courses are finally offered. The actual timetables are usually published just shortly before the start of the lectures.

"my.h-da.de" and registration for exams

my.h-da.de is the administration system for students at the h_da (user interface in German only). You will use it to book your courses and exams. It is the central tool for your course outline at our faculty, too, so familiarize yourself with its functions!

Language courses and "SuK"

Our Language Centre offers a wide range of courses in English, Français, Español, Português and, Deutsch as a foreign language every semester. In addition to the intensive German course (4 ECTS) for exchange students at the beginning of the semester, you can take German courses and Intercultural Communication (2.5 - 4 ECTS) during the semester. The h_da also offers so-called SuK courses on social and cultural science topics. These courses are organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences and are open to students from all faculties.

Please register here (QIS) to participate in language courses and SuK courses

Transcript of Records

You can view your results via my.h-da.de. At the end of your semester abroad, we will issue your official Transcript of Records and send it to your home university. It documents your academic achievements during your exchange period at h_da.

Orientation days and Meet & Greet

At the beginning of each semester, the International Office at h_da organizes an orientation program for all our exchange students to help you find your way here in Darmstadt. Not only do we help with formalities such as enrollment, but we also organize an extended program so that you get to know Darmstadt and your fellow students. German language crash courses will also start during the orientation days.

Shortly before the start of lectures, we invite you to a Meet & Greet with our international team to welcome you to the computer science faculty, and answer any remaining questions you may still have about your studies here. You can also find out what the upcoming timetables will actually look like, which modules will be offered in English and/or German, and the assigned lecturers. We will help with questions you may have about course enrollment, too.

Afterwards you can address any doubts as to the courses that interest you directly to the assigned lecturers. They inform you about the course requirements, in particular also in terms of language and examination procedures. Discuss your final course choices with your international academic coordinators and your program coordinators, and have them sign possible changes to your Learning Agreement.

Campus

The computer science faculty is located on the h_da main campus in Schöfferstraße, Darmstadt. Building D14 is the CS faculty's main building. Your courses might take place also in other buildings, but all premises are in close walking distance to each other.

In building C23 you find the h_da Student Service Center (SSC).

The library is located in building D10.

Building C11 hosts the canteen. Here you can see the menu for the week, and also download the canteen-app for Android and iOS.

Campus-Card

The Campus-Card is your student ID card for the entire duration of your studies at h_da. It combines various functions:

  • RMV semester pass (free public transport)
  • Library card
  • Payment card for the canteen
  • Theatre and cinema ticket (discount)

You must reapply for your Campus-Card every semester. To do so, your semester fee for the next semester must already be paid. The revalidation machines will reprint your Campus-Card on the front side. A machine is e.g. located in building D10 (map of all revalidation devices).

FAQ

You can find the answers to almost all your questions on the pages of the International Office. There you will find information also on points that are not related to the computer science faculty!

For example, you can find there

Yes, we endeavour to offer at least a "full load" (30 ECTS credits) of English-language courses in both the undergraduate and Master's degree programs.

A list of approved courses can be found in our module handbook. Please note, however, that not all courses are offered in every semester.

See above in the “Modules and courses” section, and bear in mind that flexibility reasons can cause the final course offerings to be fixed only at short notice (just before the semester starts).

Please contact the computer science faculty's international team for up-to-date information. If you are studying at one of our partner universities, ask your international coordinator - we try to keep our partners up to date.

No, not at this time. However, we do offer double degrees for students from some of our partner universities.

Until 2017, we offered an English-language Master's degree called JIM (Joint International Master), but this program is closed and no longer accepts applications.

Have you already read all our related web pages in full? Have you also checked the pages of the hd_da International Office?

We still haven't answered your questions? In this case, please contact the cs faculty's international team at internationalrelations.fbi(at)h-da.de

The International Office can answer most questions on general topics (not specific to computer science).
