Hardening of emergency vehicles to protect against cyber attacks (HECA)

On 6 March 2025, State Secretary of the Interior Martin Rößler ceremoniously handed over a funding decision of over 338,000 euros to Prof. Dr Christoph Krauß from Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. These funds will be used to support the research project "Hardening of emergency vehicles to protect against cyber attacks" (HECA), which is dedicated to the security of digital components in emergency vehicles. As modern police vehicles are increasingly networked and therefore represent potential targets for attack, the project aims to help increase the IT security of these vehicles and ensure that emergency services can carry out their missions without disruption.

The funding is part of the Hessian funding guideline "Cybersecurity Research in Hesse", which has proven to be an extremely valuable instrument for linking innovative research with concrete needs. In particular, the close cooperation with the Hessian police ensures that practical solutions are developed for real threat scenarios. The funding enables researchers to respond specifically to current challenges and thus make a direct contribution to the state's internal security.

Prof Dr Christoph Krauß and his team would like to thank the Hessian Ministry of the Interior, Sport and Homeland Security for its support and clear commitment to cyber security research. This commitment plays a key role in ensuring that Hessen is prepared for the growing threats in the digital space with innovative projects.
