New professors in the winter semester 2023/2024
We warmly welcome three new professors to our faculty as of 1 October 2023:
Prof Dr Martin Abel has been appointed to the Department of Databases. He studied physics at Saarland University in Saarbrücken. After completing his doctorate in theoretical solid state physics at the Jülich Research Centre, he moved to Deutsche Bank AG in Frankfurt to work in the Online Payment Systems division. At the international management consultancy Cambridge Technology Partners, he held a management position advising companies in the banking and insurance sectors. He founded his own management consultancy and joined the management board of enpevita GmbH in Cuxhaven, an innovative start-up in the field of intelligent medical mass data processing. Martin Abel has been teaching at the RheinMain and Darmstadt universities since 2016.
Prof Dr Florian Heinrichs joins our team in the field of artificial intelligence. He studied mathematics in Bochum and then completed his doctorate in statistics, where he conducted research into time series and functional data in particular. During this time, he spent a year studying (Barcelona) and researching (Madrid) in Spain. After his doctorate, he worked briefly as a data scientist at a pharmaceutical wholesaler, but then quickly switched to a small company that develops brain-computer interfaces. Over the last 2.5 years, he has been measuring brain activity (EEG) in order to control computers with the help of neural networks.
Prof Dr Timo Schürg has accepted the call for the Data Science department, he teaches and researches both at our faculty and at the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. He most recently taught mathematics and data science at Bingen University of Applied Sciences. Previously, he carried out various data science projects for companies in the production, logistics and finance industries. He is a mathematician by training and did his doctorate in algebraic geometry and subsequent research.
A warm welcome to all three!
