Transition to the new SPO

Zwei Studierende schauen auf Informatik-Hardware

New study and examination regulations (SPO) for the following study programmes in the Faculty of Computer Science will come into force in the winter semester 2021/2022:

  • B. Sc. Computer Science
  • B. Sc. Computer Science with a focus on Communication and Media
  • B. Sc. Computer Science - dual - KITS (KoSI, KITS)
  • M. Sc. computer science

The information on this page is only a summary of the BBPOn (Special Provisions of the Examination Regulations) of the study programmes, which can be found in the University Gazette. The information presented on this website is without guarantee.

What does the expiry of the SPO 2014 mean for me?

As a student of the SPO 2014, you now have two options:

Option 1: You remain in the old SPO 2014 and complete your degree programme in this SPO.

  • You do not have to do anything, but you should inform yourself about what you have to consider (see option 1)

Option 2: You switch to the new SPO.

  • You must take action yourself (see option 2).

Option 1

Please note that some modules of the SPO 2014 will only be offered for a certain period of time. This is particularly important if you have not yet successfully completed the PVL in this module. If you are unable to accept the last offer of a course within your regular study period, please contact the degree programme coordinator.

The following courses will be offered for the last time in the semester indicated in the table and will not be replaced by an equivalent course in the new SPO. This means that the respective semester is the last opportunity to obtain any necessary PVL. The examinations (i.e. usually written examinations) for all specified courses will be offered up to and including the summer semester 2026.

For all other modules of the SPO 2014, there are equivalent modules in the new SPO which you can complete alternatively and include in a degree in accordance with the SPO 2014.

FAQ Option 1

No, you do not need to take any further action in this case, but you should follow the instructions under "Option 1".

The SPO 2014 is expected to finally expire in the summer semester 2026, i.e. by this time at the latest, all students still in the SPO 2014 will be contacted by the Examination Board for a change to the new SPO.

The courses for the modules from the SPO 2014 that are no longer offered in the SPO 2021 will be discontinued in the coming semesters (see table under option 1). All examinations in these modules will be offered for two semesters longer.

Option 2: I switch to the new SPO

You must apply to the Examination Board to switch to the new SPO (see Downloads). Before submitting the application, you must have attended a mandatory counselling interview with the responsible head of degree programme. The background to this is that a change to the new SPO can no longer be cancelled.

Whether a change is worthwhile depends on which modules you are still missing for your degree after changing to the new SPO. Please also note that the modules in the new SPO will only be offered from a certain semester onwards and that a number of additional requirements apply in the new SPO. The latter may mean that you are not allowed to take certain modules immediately.

FAQ Option 2

You can switch to the new SPO 2021 every semester. To do this, submit the application for a change of SPO (see download area) to the Examinations Office by 15 September for a change for the winter semester or 15 March for a change for the summer semester (currently possible by email).

Please note that the obligatory counselling interview with the head of degree programme must have already taken place by this time.

Yes, once your application for a change of SPO has been received, you will be transferred to the new SPO by the Examinations Office. All existing equivalent modules in the new SPO will then be automatically recognised and transferred to your transcript of records.

Modules from the old SPO for which there is no equivalent module in the new SPO will be shown on your certificate as an additional achievement. These modules are not used to determine the overall grade.

No, after a change you can only take modules within the framework of the new SPO.

This means that after switching, you may have to wait until a module is offered for the first time in the SPO 2021. You can see which modules of the new SPO will be offered for the first time in the table under option 2.

Yes, in the case of an SPO change, all failed attempts at equivalent modules are taken into account.

The courses from the SuK compulsory elective catalogue will continue to be offered.

A passed SuK module from the SuK compulsory elective catalogue (QIS) will also be recognised as a SuK module in the new SPO 2021.

  • The modules "Fundamentals of Discrete Mathematics" and "Linear Algebra" will be recognised as "Mathematics 1" after a change. If you have only passed one of the two modules, you must complete the "Mathematics 1" module in full.
  • There is no equivalent module in the SPO 2014 for the "Mathematics 2" module that you can have recognised.
  • You can have the module "Fundamentals of Analysis" recognised as an additional achievement on your transcript after the change.

There are no equivalent modules from the SPO 2014 for the modules "Algorithms and Data Structures" and "Mathematics 2", so you must complete these two modules in any case after a change.

No. The rule that passed modules cannot be repeated also applies to equivalent modules after an SPO change.

industry for many years, including at Schneider Electric as Innovation and Patent Manager with a focus on AI, mobile solutions and software development. In addition to his teaching activities, he heads an interdisciplinary research project to set up a digital apiary – a real-world laboratory with a digital twin that links ecological data with modern sensor technology and AI. The apiary is available to students and researchers from all disciplines and promotes sustainability, data science and systemic thinking.
