Why pursue a dual study programme?

Grafik Semesterübersicht Studiengang

Studying and still earning money? A pure course outline is too theoretical?
The dual study programmes at the Faculty of Computer Science offer both: a scientific course of study and practical experience in a company.

In addition to lectures and seminars, students have the opportunity to apply what they have learnt in practical projects. The students are supervised by specialist supervisors in the company and by lecturers at the university. The dual computer science degree programme also guarantees a fixed salary throughout.

Bachelor dual

KoSI (Bachelor of Science)

The KoSI (Cooperative Study Programme in Computer Science) study programme offers general computer science studies and practical experience in a company. This professionally qualifying Bachelor's degree course creates a solid foundation in computer science - students then have the opportunity to specialise their knowledge in the Master's degree course.

On the dual study programme, students spend around half of their time working in a partner company to which they have previously applied. There are general lecture-free periods at the university and specific dual practical stages in the third, fifth and seventh semesters. During the lecture-free periods, students work in the company. During practical stages, students work on projects from the company's everyday life and are jointly supervised by the company and the university. The practical stages are recognised as coursework.

KITS (Bachelor of Science)

The KITS (Cooperative Study Programme IT Security) deals with topics such as encryption, data security and network filters, because in times of big data and industrial espionage, IT security is becoming increasingly important. However, many companies need support or must first be sensitised to the topic. IT security consultants answer questions about information security, create and implement IT security concepts, lead workshops or carry out security analyses.

Students learn about legal requirements and standards for IT security, as well as typical attack patterns on software and suitable countermeasures. They will take into account all levels of computer science: from hardware and networks to application software. This enables you to design and evaluate security measures for IT applications.

Master

The dual Master's study programme in computer science teaches students the ability to apply scientific methods and findings to the processing of difficult and complex IT problems. The special feature of the dual study programme is the close integration with practice. Students are already employed by a partner company during their course outline. Course outlines can be chosen from the following areas:

  • Business informatics
  • Software engineering
  • IT security
  • Technical and graphical systems

Students are supervised by lecturers from the university and mentors from their respective partner companies throughout the entire course outline.

The dual Master's programme is a variant of the general Master's programme offered by the Faculty of Computer Science. They are based on the same study and examination regulations and share the same core elective catalogue under module description according to examination regulations. Details on the content of the individual courses can be found in the corresponding module handbook.

Gain experience abroad for a semester? This is possible with the cooperative study programme models at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Students can spend a semester abroad at one of the many partner universities of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (or at a university of their choice).

As the start of the semester at foreign universities does not correspond to the start of the semester at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, the most suitable time for a semester abroad is between the fifth and sixth semester. To ensure that the semester abroad runs smoothly, students should plan a year in advance. It is therefore important that students contact the dual degree programme coordinator for computer science in good time.

Semester abroad during the practical stages

Alternatively, students can also go abroad during one of the practical stages. They must arrange this with their respective partner company. A practical project abroad is particularly attractive if companies have projects or branches in interesting locations.
